SHACOG Technical Rescue Team
TRAINING PROGRAM
The SHACOG Technical Rescue Team trains at least once a month on the third thursday evening, a daylight weekday three times a year and four weekends throughout the year. The Water Rescue Division trains with the TRT and also has their own in water drills every other month.
The team uses the FEMA Target Hazard Risk Assessment tool to look at the South Hills of Pittsburgh. Our training is based on this hazard assessment. All of our Rescue Technicians are National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications (ProBoard) or the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) certified. This means that the levels of accredited professional certification required by the SHACOG TRT meet or exceed Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standards.
Team members are trained and IFSAC / Pro-Board certified to:
Trench Rescue Technician Level 2,
Rope Rescue Technician Level 2,
Confined Space Rescue Technician Level 2,
Machinery Rescue Technician Level 2,
Preparing for the Surface Water Rescue Technician testing in 2018.
The team is on a rotation of certification testing - every other year we do a NFPA 1006 certification test allowing new members to become certified. Confined Space, Trench, Rope certifications are on the rotation. The off years is a maintenance training year - keeping all skills up to date and meeting OSHA and NFPA 1006 requirements for yearly skills verification. We also run a NFPA 1006 general requirements (CORE) and Vehicle & Machinery course and test in the off years.
