With the increase in new construction and never ending maintenance of underground utilities, it is safe to assume that every day of the year there is an open trench/excavation within the South Hills.  Trench rescue operations present a significant danger to rescue personnel and may involve complex requirements for shoring, hand tools, earth-moving equipment, and other specialized resources.  The TRT trains at least once a year in a live trench and does at least 16 hours of training per year on trench rescue.   The team uses AirShore trench shores.  The team also has specialized air knives and vacuum equipment to attach to the SHACOG vacuum trucks.
